In an initiative to make Pakistani citizenry part of a global movement for energy conservation, a number of individuals who have shown excellence in their fields were acknowledged as 'Earth Hour Ambassadors' and March 31 was declared as 'Earth Hour 2012′ day at a ceremony held here on Wednesday. The programme was organised by the Worldwide Fund for Nature-Pakistan.
Hockey Olympic star Sohail Abbas, tennis player Aisam-ul-Haq with showbiz personalities Bushra Ansari, Shahzad Roy, Faisal Qureshi, Fawad Afzal Khan and Nadia Hussain, who were honoured as Earth Hour Ambassadors, officially endorsed the concept of the global movement and lit candles as a gesture of energy conservation.
Declaring Sindh as the Earth Hour province and Karachi as the Earth Hour city, Minister for Environment Sindh and MQM Leader Sheikh Mohammad Afzal urged people to realise the importance of energy conservation and make efficient use of available resources.
Pakistan, he said, had adversely been affected by climate change and global warming, though it was not a major contributor to greenhouse gases. "We have braved devastating floods for two consecutive years. Now a collective action is needed to address environmental issues," he said.
The celebrities also called for participation of all public and private sector institutions, civil society members, the media and academia in working towards energy conservation. "Even a small effort aimed at environmental conservation can bring about a big change," said Bushra Ansari, pointing out that the lack of implementation of relevant laws was a major cause of environmental degradation.
Later, a candle-lighting ceremony was held which was followed by a briefing by the Earth Hour ambassadors to the media. The celebrities urged the people to participate in the Earth Hour 2012 and join them in switching off all extra lights and electric appliances on March 31 from 8.30pm to 9.30pm. Less
